The Neptune 4 Max and Kobra 2 Max are the newest large build volume FDM printers that run on Klipper, bringing input shaping and pressure advance.

Overall, we recommend the the Neptune 4 Max if you are printing engineering filament like Nylon or ASA. If you only plan on printing PLA, consider going for the cheapest printer.

The smaller and cheaper FDM printers are the Elegoo Neptune 4, Sovol SV06/SV07, and the Anycubic Kobra 2.

There is feedback of firmware issues on the first batches of the Neptune 4 Max.

Elegoo Neptune 4 Max and Anycubic Kobra 2 Max

  • Both the Neptune 4 Max and Kobra 2 Max use Klipper, but Anycubic uses a custom version.
  • Both printers have dual z-axis motors.
  • Both printers use a PEI coated spring steel sheet as the print surface.
  • Both printers come with a touch screen control interface.

1 - Dupont's maximum service temperature for PTFE is 260°C, but documentation notes that PTFE begins to decompose at 230°C. The decomposition rate at 260°C is 2 to 20 times higher than at 230°C, and we recommend using 230°C as a safety limit if you do not have adequate ventilation or filtration.

Final Thoughts

Between the two printers, there is equal amounts of negative feedback for a variety of reasons, such as firmware, dead power supply units, and faulty wiring.

These large FDM printers are an excellent choice if you are looking to 3D print gigantic prints all in one go. Two examples are cosplay headpieces and large enclosures.

Bambu and Prusa printers are slightly more money but also less build volume. What you gain is additional features and reliability.
